A strong fire doesn't happen all at once.

At this stage, students are applying their reading skills to increasingly complex words and text. They are developing greater automaticity, vocabulary, fluency, and independence.

Instruction continues to strengthen the patterns within our language while helping students become more confident and capable readers.

Your child may be at the Fire if they:

• Can decode most familiar words
• Struggle primarily with longer or more complex words
• Need support with multisyllabic words
• Are working with morphology, prefixes, and suffixes
• Need greater fluency and automaticity
• Are ready to apply their skills to increasingly complex reading

The goal: Build a reader who can keep the fire burning.
