Step Three: Patterns and Advanced Concepts
Growing into a reader
The flame is burning—but it still needs fuel and attention to become steady.
Children at this stage have foundational decoding skills and are ready to apply them to increasingly complex words and patterns.
Instruction focuses on strengthening decoding, spelling, syllabication, fluency, and more advanced phonics concepts.
Your child may be at the Flame if they:
- Can read basic words independently
- Are ready for more complex phonics patterns
- Read slowly or laboriously
- Struggle with unfamiliar words
- Have difficulty with vowel teams or other advanced patterns
- Need to build accuracy and fluency
The goal: Strengthen the flame.
Year Three equips students with the tools they need to tackle longer, more complex words with confidence. Building on the foundation from Years One and Two, this course dives into advanced phonics concepts, including multisyllabic word reading, vowel team patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and morphological awareness. Students will learn to break down words, analyze parts for meaning, and read with greater accuracy and fluency.
